Discussion: Your Favourite Place to Read

After some controversial discussion topics the last few times, how about a nice simple one?  Basically, what’s your favourite place to read?

For me it’s on my bed in my bedroom.  Not only is laying down and reading the least painful position for someone like me to be in it means I’m in my own little silent area.  If I want to listen to music while reading I can.  If I want to listen to nothing at all I can.  When I’m alone I don’t have to argue about the volume of the TV/stereo/whatever, you see.  Everything is under my control and I love it.

So what’s your favourite place to read?  Why?

  1. Jemima Pett

I like to sit sideways in my old two-seater sofa, which I got re-uphostered last year to make sure I could still use it! It’s the best way of getting a good reading light, too. I used to read in bed when I was a kid, now I can’t do it at all – comes of needing glasses and not having the flexibility I used to, I think. 🙂

Well that sounds comfy too. Personally I’m usually too lazy to hold up a book and read on my back so I lay on my side and use my other pillow as a prop when I read in bed. I don’t need glasses and likely won’t for a couple more decades, so I guess I’m lucky that way.

I am like Jemima, I can’t read in bed now either. My eyes are not so much the issue as that I would go to sleep! As soon as I recline, I am asleep. If I try to even watch an hour program on tv, I would be asleep within 5-10 minutes. I love to read outside, but depending on the weather, sometimes that is impossible because it’s too hot! I don’t have a patio, so if I want to read outside, I have to take the bus (I don’t have a car) up the street about 6-8 long blocks, and sit in the park. When I was younger, I would have thought nothing of it to walk there, but I can’t do that now. Since it is a pain, I usually stay home and read, mostly in my room at my desk. If I am out anyway, I read on the bus, at the dr. office, or wherever I am, if I am standing in a line somewhere… 🙂

Sometimes falling asleep is my problem but if the book is interesting enough I generally won’t. And if only the weather was too hot to read outside here in Saskatchewan! We had such a miserably cold summer this year. I guess I can’t complain too much since it’s November and we still haven’t had a lasting snowfall. (Last year we had a lasting snowfall from October 15th until the end of March!)

I’m like you as well: I read pretty much anywhere. Then I don’t have to *gasp* socialize!
