Lazy Sundays: Kill the Boy (Game of Thrones Episode 5.05)
As always, spoilers!
1. Poor Jon. I personally think he’s making the right choice in enlisting the help of the Free Folk but it sure doesn’t seem very popular with the rest of the Night’s Watch.
2. Sansa, just get out of there! There are warning bells going off left, right and centre: Theon turned into Reek, Ramsay’s clear enjoyment of mind games, etc.
3. I hope Brienne and Podrick do manage to rescue Sansa, but realistically they’re not going to. Still, it will be interesting to see them try.
4. Oh Daenerys…first you almost kill a man then you say he was right and tell him you’re going to get married. Are you always this romantic?
5. And wow, that Missandei-Grey Worm scene was amazing. Those two actors have such great chemistry together that they make every scene together so emotional.
6. No, Ser Jorah! Why, oh why, did you have to take Jon Connington’s storyline? Gah!
What did you guys think of tonight’s episode?
Lazy Sundays: Sons of the Harpy (Game of Thrones Episode 5.04)
So here are my thoughts on the episode:
1. Since Baelish believes Sansa will be liberated by Stannis’ army (if they ever get there) he obviously trusts her to navigate the snakepit of Winterfell under the Boltons. So he clearly doesn’t know about Ramsey’s…well, everything. Most unlike him. I really do wonder if they’re setting up more of Sansa’s ruthlessness as she’s left alone to take revenge on the Boltons. Will she kill Ramsey? Will Theon/Reek kill Ramsey?
2. Cersei is playing with fire now with the Faith Militant and I think the show’s writers are setting up her downfall just beautifully. Imprisoning Ser Loras for immorality, sending Lord Tyrell away so he can’t interfere, proabably accusing Margarey of adultery…just wait until Fortune’s wheel spins again, Cersei! One minute you’re on top, the next you’re being crushed on the bottom.
3. Poor Ser Loras.
4. Poor people of King’s Landing for that matter. No booze, no brothels…whatever are they going to do?
5. Yay, we finally get to see the Sand Snakes! They’re just as wonderfully ruthless as I pictured them and I can’t wait to see them in action. So far I’m really liking Nymeria.
6. How the heck did Melisandre know about “You know nothing, Jon Snow”? I think she suspects that R + L = J and that Jon may very well not be Ned Stark’s son at all. There’s power in king’s blood, after all…
7. That was a really touching moment between Shireen and Stannis when he explained how she got greyscale. Unfortunately, I think that and Melisandre’s “the Lord needs her” comments are setting up her death, but it was still sweet.
8. No, Ser Barristan! You poor, honourable fool. I wish they hadn’t cut him out of the show yet because I like his character, but I guess it was not to be. I wonder how Daenerys is going to take his death after their quite touching scene together.
9. Well, poor Grey Worm. I think he’s wounded at this point, not dead because of the scene where Missandei kisses him in the season’s trailer.
10. Jaime and Bronn are awesome road trip buddies. I suspect they’re going to run into a lot of trouble down the road.
11. Poor Ser Jorah, poor Tyrion. They’re really not getting along at all at the moment.
Well, what did you guys think? Are you as disappointed as I am at Ser Barristan’s death? What did you think of the hints at Jon Snow’s real parentage dropped throughout the episode?
Lazy Sundays: The House of Black and White (Game of Thrones Episode 5.02)
Warning: spoilers ahead!
When I said last week that there were changes from the books I really had no idea that this second episode would change certain things so drastically. So my thoughts on the episode in no particular order:
1. Once again, go Jon Snow! Watch out for those knives in the back you’re going to attract as Lord Commander.
2. Poor Brienne, poor Podrick. What are they going to do now that Sansa has rejected their help? Sure, they’re going to follow Sansa and Littlefinger but how long until they get caught or some other misfortune befalls the almost comically unlucky pair?
3. Ooh, Bronn and Jaime are taking a guy-bonding road trip to Dorne! I wonder what the Sand Snakes and Ellaria are going to think of that when they of course discover the conspicuous duo.
4. What marriage proposal is Littlefinger talking about when Sansa questions him about his raven scroll?
5. I think Daenerys did the right thing with ordering the former slave’s death for killing that master before his trial but she’s going to take a lot of flack for that. Everyone’s going to turn against her now, just like in the books.
6. Yay, Jaqen H’gar is back! And Arya’s finally been accepted into the House of Black and White to become a Faceless/Nameless woman. I hope those scenes aren’t as boring as I found them in the books.
7. Are we going to meet the Sand Snakes yet? So far we’re two episodes in and we’ve got exactly one mention of them when Ellaria was threatening Prince Doran.
8. Kevan Lannister is not like his brother Tywin but he apparently does have that Lannister steel (and misogyny). Grand Maester Pycelle also sure doesn’t seem happy about Qyburn being named Master of Whisperers. Mace Tyrell, being of course Mace Tyrell, seems perfectly content with Cersei’s empty flattery. He doesn’t care where the order comes from as long as he gets some recognition.
9. Poor Shireen. She really does have a horrible mother and I thought it was so cute to see her teaching Gilly how to read just like she taught Ser Davos.
10. Ah, poor Tyrion. Still drinking, still indulging in self-pity.
So what did you guys think of episode 5.02? I thought it was a pretty solid episode and I’m kind of happy with the Jaime and Bronn trip to Dorne. It’s a huge change from the book but I think it will certainly make things more interesting.
Lazy Sundays: The Wars to Come (Game of Thrones Episode 5.01)
Warning: spoilers ahead!
What an episode tonight, folks. There was not much in the way of action but there’s plenty of intrigue that I’m very excited about, including some changes from the books. So in no particular order:
1. Go Jon Snow! Still mopey, still defying kings.
2. Where is Sansa going? Or rather, where is Littlefinger taking Sansa far in the west?
3. Ooh, Lancel is now one of the Sparrows and Cersei laughed in his face when he talked about religion. Not a good idea to laugh at zealots, Cersei…
4. On that note, it was great to see young Cersei visiting Maggie the Frog and it introduces that all-important prophecy that will really come to haunt Cersei during the coming events.
5. Margarey’s right: Loras better be a little more discreet about his sexual preferences.
6. Tyrion’s going to Meereen to meet with Daenerys! Will he meet with Ser Jorah like in the books or will the two paths collide in an entirely different way? And will a certain mysterious character be joining Varys and Tyrion on their journey?
7. Poor Daenerys. Viserion and Rhaegal are totally wild and Drogon is still fully wild out in the open. Will she crack and re-open the fighting pits at Daario’s urging or will it take a certain other man to persuade her?
So what did you guys think about the episode tonight? Are you as excited for the rest of season 5 as I am?
Lazy Sundays: One Exceptionally Girly Week
I am a tom boy. I always have been and I probably always will but I am fully aware of societal expectations regarding dressing up so I’m not totally clueless…or so I thought.
Here’s all of the girly stuff I did this week:
1. I bought and applied my own make up for the first time ever. In the past I only put on make up for dance performances and in those I always had friends that were all too glad to do my hair and make up for me. So I went to the local Mary Kay representative and learned how to do my own make up and then bought some from her. So far, so good.
2. I’ve tried out hairstyles other than ‘ponytail’ or ‘braid’. It’s a really weird experience. Ladies, how the heck do you keep your arms up that long to do some of the more elaborate hairstyles? All the blood drains out of mine and they start to ache. Also, my hair will not curl. Ever.
3. I actually debated long and hard about what outfit I was going to wear. As you’ve probably guessed, this is not normal for me!
So why would I put myself through all of this?
Well, the answer is that I decided to get some professional photos done for the first time in years. I wanted to have some more formal, business-like ones her for my blog and for my real job and I also wanted some fun ones for my blog and to send to relatives (since I haven’t actually had my picture taken in at least two years). It was a really, really weird experience being in front of a professional photographer again; I haven’t been to one since I stopped dancing.
About five minutes into what would eventually be an hour-long photo shoot, I began to have even more respect for models than I did before. “Tilt your head, part your lips, give me that sexy look, go into this impossible pose!” It’s really hard, particularly when you’re really uncomfortable in front of a camera. The poor man photographing me had to do all sorts of crazy stuff to get me to actually smile widely and show my teeth. It’s not that I wasn’t trying, but nearly half a lifetime of hiding bad teeth before I got braces is hard to erase. But when he actually showed me some of the pictures on the camera I was much better because I could see it looked good.
Although I must admit most of my pictures are of me with my ‘Mona Lisa smile’, as pretty much everyone who meets me calls it. However, despite some of the physically agonizing poses I was put into I actually had a good time. It was really different getting all dressed up by myself for an event. It was weird, yet slightly liberating. Meh, it’s hard to explain. After I go to the studio and check out the photos I might post some of the fun ones here on The Mad Reviewer if I like them. If I don’t like them, only the extended Slager family will ever see them.
So, I had an exceptionally girly week. How are you guys doing? Anything exciting happening in your lives lately? How is spring progressing in your particular corner of the world? Who’s as excited as I am for next Sunday, aka Game of Thrones Season 5 Sunday?
