Lazy Sundays: Revolutions Podcast

After Mike Duncan’s amazing podcast The History of Rome I was pretty disappointed.  It had been a great podcast that got me through a lot of boring days at work and on the weekends and I was sad to see it go.  At the same time, I was pretty eager to see what Mike Duncan was going to do next.  Enter Revolutions.

Revolutions is a podcast chronicling several different revolutions throughout world history.  It starts with the English Revolution and once that was done we moved on to the American Revolution.  Currently we’re on the insanely complicated French Revolution and I couldn’t be happier.  Mike Duncan makes history so accessible to the average person and although he gaffes sometimes, his research is very thorough and is usually spot-on.  He combines both humour and fact to make what I thought were boring events absolutely fascinating.  So every Sunday like today I eagerly await the newest episode of Revolutions.

If you like podcasts in general or you love history, I can’t recommend it enough.  It’s free on iTunes and he runs a sort of voluntary donation service where you can do a one time donation or a monthly donation in appreciation for his efforts.  It’s pretty cool and you can check it out on his official site.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll be refreshing the Revolutions feed on iTunes every hour or so until the new episode comes out.

Lazy Sundays: The Walking Dead is Finally Back!

So after that rather lively discussion yesterday (which is still ongoing if you want to chime in) I think I definitely deserve a lazy Sunday.  So today I’ll be writing a couple of reviews for the week ahead, possibly writing a Forgotten Figures article and of course watching second half of The Walking Dead season 5.

They sure left off on a cliffhanger with the events at the hospital and I’m very interested to see how their trip to Virginia goes.  Will they find sanctuary or will the place be overrun?  Due to the series’ current pattern I’d say it probably is too good to be true and won’t be a shelter for Rick and the gang.  Or it will be a decent shelter before the series’ next villain decides he wants it or makes everyone take sides as to what they’ll do to survive.  Still, I’m very interested in seeing how the characters cope with the death of a certain character, particularly Maggie and Daryl.

On another note, another of my favourite shows is coming back tonight as well: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.  I’m so glad that HBO has both expanded his writing crew as well as given him 35 instead of 24 episodes for the season.  John Oliver uses his comedy to take on some pretty tough issues in a funny yet horrifying way that makes you both laugh and want to weep for humanity at times.  It’s great entertainment and it’s more informative than the ‘real’ news so I’m also very excited to have it back.

What are you guys up to this Sunday?

Lazy Sundays: Game of Thrones Season 5 Trailer!

When I saw that the Game of Thrones season 5 trailer had been leaked to the internet in the form of a videotaped Imax preview, I was so excited.  Then I got really excited when I saw that the producers had gone ahead and just released the official trailer since it was leaked anyway.  (Knowing them, they knew full well it was going to be leaked and totally planned the whole thing.)  Of course, being the glutton for punishment that I am, I watched the trailer a couple of times and now am so excited for April 12.  *mild spoilers ahead*

In the trailer we see the Sand Snakes, some of my favourite Dornish characters and they look absolutely amazing.  We also see Tyrion and Varys, Cersei being her usual scowling self, Littlefinger with his hands all over Sansa, Daenerys being queenly, etc.  Nothing really all that surprising since I’ve read the books but I’m excited nevertheless.  One of the really short clips was of a young blonde girl and a young brunette in fancy gowns walking in some dark woods.  Could this be young Cersei going to see the witch and receive the prophecy that haunts her throughout her life, particularly now?

Seriously, I can’t wait for Season 5.  It’s going to be good.

Any other Game of Thrones fans out there?  What do you think of the trailer?  Anything you see that particularly excites you/piques your interest?

Lazy Sundays: Sick Brain

Just on Friday night I woke up from a nice long sleep and felt like crap.  My throat hurts (again), my nose is running and I’ve got an aching body that suggests good ol’ influenza.  I’m hoping it’s not because I have some pretty important stuff to do at work on Monday but it looks like it’s not getting any better anytime soon.  Yuck.

On a side note, one of the things I’ve noticed during the numerous times I’ve been sick is that I get so-called ‘sick brain’.  My head feels like it’s stuffed with cotton, I can’t focus on anything for too long and I’m sleepy yet unable to sleep.  Also, my coordination is next to nil so I’m typing this post at about 10wpm.  I wouldn’t mind being sick as much if I didn’t lose all of my higher brain functions along with it.  Does anyone else get this?

So basically my plans for this Lazy Sunday are as follows: sleep, sleep and more sleep.  Maybe interspersed by reading books I don’t have to think too much about and trying to coherently reply to comments.  In essence, this really will be a lazy Sunday.  I had planned on doing some research for the next Forgotten Figures article (which I’m really looking forward to; my next subject is a pretty cool lady) but obviously that’s not happening now.  Next weekend!

What are you guys up to today?  Do you get ‘sick brain’ as well when you have a cold/influenza?

Lazy Sundays: Rural Drivers are Terrifying

As most of you know, I’ve lived my entire life in a really small town.  And by small town I don’t mean what newscasters usually mean when they say that same phrase.  This is not a town of ‘only’ 5,000 people.  I live in a village of about 300.  So yeah, I know all about rural driving.

It still terrifies me.

More so than driving in the city, driving in my own town terrifies me sometimes.  Why?  Because the drivers are insane.  People who live in rural areas tend to take the exact same route to work every day and usually you’re lucky if you see one car on that route.  So over the years people get lazy and stop doing things like checking for other cars at intersections and drive down the middle of the road on blind corners or hills because they think “Oh well, there’s never anyone here anyway.”  Except when there is.

Last Saturday I yet again avoided a collision in the middle of town.  We only have one paved road in town (the main street) and I was going down the road on my way to the gas station.  I drive a fairly little car you see, so I’m always on the look out for people in bigger vehicles who don’t watch where they’re going.  Thank goodness I did because in an intersection that dumps onto the main road some idiot was coming down in a great big truck and was not going to stop at the stop sign.  (This is a fairly common problem as there’s only ever one cop in the area and he usually works on the main highway.)  So I jammed on my brakes and honked my horn to get their attention.  They stopped and then had the nerve to wave at me to go on as if I was the idiot in the scenario.  Ugh.

So yes, rural drivers are terrifying.  They don’t look at all where they’re going, they often drive way too fast (150km/h in a 100km/h zone on a regular basis) and most people drive big trucks so collisions are really nasty when they do happen.  In a lot of ways, driving in my village is way more terrifying than driving in the city.  At least in the city I know most people are watching where they’re driving; in my village I know most people aren’t watching where they’re driving.

In your experience, where are the drivers the worst?  If you live in a rural area, do you notice the same problems or is my village just special?
