Publication Date: April 1, 2014

Series: Orc Saga, Book One

Genre: Fantasy (18+)

After nearly a decade as the king’s whipping-girl, Princess Arianna has no intention of going quietly into marriage to some treasonous noble, or serving obediently as the king’s spy until her death is more convenient. When she discovers a handsome orc, chained and trapped inside a magic mirror, Arianna cannot help but see a lasting freedom from her father’s abuse.

Left to rot inside a mirror by the king, Bolthorn never imagined his prayers would be answered by a princess. Nor did he ever expect to meet so worthy a woman after knowing her father’s cruelty. He needs her help to escape the mirror before the king marches against the orcs, but all he can offer Arianna is ice and darkness in exchange for her aid.

If Arianna can free the monster behind the glass, perhaps she might free herself, as well. But once they cross the mountain, there will be no return, and the deadly winter is the least of what threatens them on the other side. Romance blossoms in this gripping fantasy adventure.
EXCERPT

He knew these woods, sparse as they had become, and when they broke, he knew the tundra of the foothills too. Just before dawn, he found the outcrop beneath which he had made a shelter his first night beyond the mountains, and though he did not dare to light a fire, the sedge made a soft bed.
After a meal of apples and cheese, the last of their food, Arianna curled against his side, sharing the fur, and rested her head on his shoulder. He tested her forehead for fever and breathed his relief when she did not burn against his palm.
She tugged his hand away, a small smile curving her lips. “You worry overmuch. There are still two days of warmth before I must fight your cruel winds. I will be well enough for your mountains by then.”
His fingers lingered against her skin and her smile faded. He traced the clan-markings on her cheek and her lips parted, her heart thrumming in his ears.
“Bolthorn –”
Up the bridge of her nose and over her eyebrow, the umber flaked from her skin, coloring his fingertip. Down along the line of her jaw, to the pulse point beneath. Her breathing hitched. He only wished the marks had reached her collarbone, to give him some excuse to trail his fingers across the smooth skin there.
“You make a beautiful orc.”
“Not a Vala?” she asked, her eyelashes sweeping across her cheek.
“The Vala cannot marry.” The sunlight caught in her hair, flashing reds within the rich brown and he smoothed the soft, wild strands from her face. “They cannot bear children, or know the touch of any kind of man after they have made their vows. They know only the ancestors and the mysteries they reveal.”
“Oh,” she breathed.
Oh. It was the first thing she had ever said to him, trembling against the stone. She trembled now, too. As she should, he thought, knowing herself within the arms of an orc. He closed his eyes and drew his hand back. This was a dangerous game to play with her so near, so vulnerable.
“Sleep well, princess,” he said, his jaw tight against his need. “You’ll want your strength.”
She made a noise in the back of her throat, but when he glanced at her, she had turned away.

[Full disclosure: I have had a close working relationship with The Masquerade Crew and its leader, Mark Lee, for a year.  I was going to become one of the editors of this anthology until circumstances not under my control interfered and I had to drop out.  With that said, this review is, as always, honest.]

I’m not a big anthology reader, but I really did love this one.  For one, I love science fiction and secondly I do love a good short story.  And believe me, there are some awesome short stories in here.

I’ll be totally predictable and say that my personal favourite was the anthology’s namesake: Forbidden Future.  The main character was well-developed and interesting and the future he was thrust into was somewhat believable.  And the ending was tragic and yet hilarious, but I can’t explain too much or that would spoil the awesome surprise.  I won’t critique each short story, but on the whole I could relate to the characters and the futures were interesting.  It’s hard to fit a whole new future into just a short story, but these authors were pretty awesome and managed to achieve it.  Some futures were fantastic, others terrifying.  There was a good balance in the selection of the stories because no two really predicted similar futures.

The one thing I had a gripe with was the editing.  This is The Masquerade Crew’s first anthology and some of the editing was, admittedly, a little rough.  There were basic typographical errors that should have been caught and I’m hoping they’ll be corrected in any subsequent editions.  I don’t think there were enough to really distract from the story, but they are there and they are noticeable.

There’s a little something for everyone in Forbidden Future.  There’s stories that get very technical for those fans of hard science fiction, but there’s also more character-driven stories for people like me who don’t necessarily understand a great deal of science.  Yet in all the stories the main characters are interesting and characterization certainly wasn’t sacrificed in the world-building process.  Each author had an unique voice and so did their characters.

Overall I’m pretty happy with the anthology.  It never really had a weak story that I just wanted to skip through; all of the stories here were pretty strong.  I look forward to future anthologies by The Masquerade Crew.  And with the anthology on sale on Amazon for $.99 until December 7th, where can you go wrong?

I give this book 4.5/5 stars.

Q & A with Craig

Who inspired you to become a writer?

My mother set an example for me. In 1970, she published a series of small books that documented the history of the now beatified monk—Father Junipero Serra—and his journey throughout the state of California, to establish Catholic missions.

Written in sonnet form, her books were used as the basis for producing spectacular pageants, throughout the State of California, in celebration of its Bicentennial. Copies of “Sonnets to Serra” now reside at the Vatican library in Rome.

During nearly thirty-five of my earlier years, I had been writing pretty much for myself or, as owner of my own advertising and marketing firm, under client contracts. Years of writing copy for regional and national advertising markets—and for public relations campaigns—rounded out my ability to express my ideas.

Privately, I started with poetry and lyrical works—eventually encouraged and inspired by Illinois’ Poet Laureate and Pulitzer prize-winning poet, the late Gwendolyn Brooks. Ms. Brooks volunteered to personally review my poetry over dinner and lunch, one weekend, to discuss her favorites. During our time together, she also offered suggestions to improve several others.

Further encouragement came from an old friend, who recently passed away… renowned composer-pianist, Roger Williams—the first pianist ever to receive a gold record. On two occasions, Roger attempted to get my more lyrical pieces published within the recording industry. But times had changed, by then, and he reported my work was considered “too romantic”, for that moment in time.

Additional inspiration came from studio executive and comedienne, Lucille Ball. While working in post-production, at Desilu Studios, I wrote a script for “The Lucy Show” (not the original “I Love Lucy”). She personally read the script, rejected it, but told me not to give up writing. While I was artistic-producing director for the Lucille Ball Studio Theater, she continued to encourage my creative abilities.

As a member of the National Speaker’s Association and International Platform Association, I was first published in an anthology titled “Star Spangled Speakers”. In the book, officially dedicated and presented to President Reagan, was a copy of my speech on decision-making.

Following on these experiences, I decided it was time to move on to larger literary pursuits. My first novel is actually my second. The original, a science-fiction fantasy thriller, was put on hold when the idea developed for my suspense-thriller—OMAR.

Blog Tour

Well, I’m doing my first blog tour!  Well, technically it isn’t even my tour.  As part of his mission to promote indie and self-published authors, Mark of The Masquerade Crew has reached out to other bloggers to get the word out about a certain number of books.  Those of us that post for his tour will get a chance to win an Amazon gift card and our readers will get the chance to learn about great indie books they never may have heard of before.

Tomorrow I will be posting my first tour article, but I want to ask you guys: Do you want me to do blog tours?  Please post your answer and reasons in the comments section.  If the general consensus is no, I won’t go any further on the tour, but if you guys like blog tours I will keep going with it.
