Lazy Sundays: I Have a Weird Kitten
Part of being a book lover seems to also mean I love cats, which I of course do. So like the crazy cat lady I am, I’m going to talk about my cat on this lazy Sunday while I brainstorm for my next Forgotten Figures article.
I know that all cats have unique personalities and quirks, just like people, but I think my little Tyrion is weirder than most cats. Here are just some of his odd quirks:
1. He has a favourite toy that used to look like a squirrel until he ripped its tail and arms off and tore its front up so bad I had to sew on a patch. (This squirrel is a pretty sad-looking critter, I’ll admit, but Tyrion would go ballistic if I just threw it out.) The odd thing about this is that he takes it everywhere, even to bed, just carrying it around in his mouth. He’ll go up to his scratching post (which has a bowl shape at the top for him to sleep), bringing his squirrel and set him down between his front paws. Then he’ll bathe both himself and the squirrel, occasionally making prrrt sounds at it like he’s talking to it. It’s just plain weird.
2. He likes fruit. Specifically, strawberries, oranges, pineapple and blueberries. I thought cats weren’t supposed to like citrus? Like, at all. So how on earth does this crazy cat harass me whenever I cut up strawberries for myself until I just give in and give him a couple small scraps?
3. Ever since I brought him home when he was seven weeks old, he loves to stand up on his back legs. Usually it’s when he hears a sound and wants to see what’s going on, but sometimes it seems to be for no good reason. Apparently, in addition to liking fruit he thinks he’s a meerkat.
4. Finally, he sticks his tongue out a lot. When he’s sleeping, when he’s awake, when he’s playing/play-fighting with me, etc. It’s like he forgets to stick it back in and when I touch it to remind him he has a tongue he gets annoyed. My old cat did that sometimes but I think that’s because he was getting senile; Tyrion is as sharp as a whip but he still leaves his tongue out.
So, how about you guys? Do your pets do weird things that aren’t really typical for the species? Does anyone but my cat have a favourite toy that’s sort of like a comfort blanket?
Merry Christmas!
Well, I’m not very eloquent or very motivated to be so today, so I’ll just give a shout out to everyone: Merry Christmas!
And if you aren’t celebrating Christmas, happy Thursday!
Lazy Sundays: Saskatchewan in Winter
This year we were pretty lucky in my area not to have such an early snow, unlike last year when we had snow on the ground since October 17th. We didn’t really get much snow until mid-November and it’s been pretty icy ever since. Add to that the fact that my car is rear wheel drive and driving can be pretty interesting.
But one of the only good things about winter is that winter in Saskatchewan is extraordinarily pretty. We have all of the picturesque fields, the snow-covered hay bales, and most importantly of all, tons of hoarfrost. Today I braved the cold so I could share some of the beautiful scenes with you guys:
I didn’t go to get any closeups because the snow is up to my knees in the fields (even though you can still see some of the quack grass and weeds poking up) and it is miserably cold.
So what are you guys up to this Sunday? What’s the weather like where you are?
Completely Random Kitten Update
Remember back in July when I got my new kitten, Tyrion? Well, he used to be 1.9lbs at 7 weeks old when I brought him home. This is him at five days old:
Well, he’s certainly grown and thrived since then because here’s a more recent picture of the formerly-little guy:
When I brought him home he was so tiny for seven weeks that I thought I’d have a perpetually 7 or 8 pound cat. I’m thinking this is not the case since he’s 6 and a half months old and straddling the ten pound line. He’s got a lot of growing to do yet!
Lazy Sundays: December is Insane
[I may do these Lazy Sundays features once in a while when I really don’t have anything of substance to post on the weekend. We’ll see.]
Okay, so December is insane. Not the actual month, but all the things that people plan in that month. In a small town, that also means that the same people have to put on all of these events. That means that on Friday I was Santa’s helper at the Santa Day event, Saturday I worked a crazy shift at work and today I worked at Bingo for the school community council to raise money for a new playground. I didn’t have a day to myself this whole week. (Plus, the bingo crowd takes life way, way too seriously.)
Basically, my brain is mush. I’m organizing a canned food drive for the local charity, trying to help raise money for a new playground (which is insanely expensive) and just generally helping out with community events. Everyone has so many events planned in this single month that it’s insane. Ugh.
At least my boss is going on holiday to Mexico for two weeks at the end of the month. Then I’ll finally have time to myself!
So how is your December? Is it just as crazy as mine?
