Nothing is Free

Rant Mode: On.

Today I got a very generic email from a blogger that wanted me to promote their blog here on The Mad Reviewer.  Here is a copy of the email:

Hey I was just wondering if you’d have a look at my blog (www.anotherpretentiousteenagethemedblog.com) and if you enjoy it would you mind promoting it on your blog?
I loved your list!
Cheers
🙂

Okay, so the domain name isn’t real but I’m certainly not giving the person in question the publicity they were asking for.  I sent them a reply, not-so-politely informing them that I do not work for free.  Thus, my rant today: nothing is free.

But wait, Carrie, you say.  Don’t you run this blog for free?  Don’t you guest post for free?  Don’t you review books for free?

Eh, not really. Continue reading

Look What Just Arrived! (#6)

Carrie Pictures 2012 279People seem to think (and I don’t know where they got this idea from) that I like books.  That’s why I got a lot of books for Christmas.  So here they are:

  • The Path of the Fallen by Dan O’Brien
  • The First Man of Rome by Colleen McCullough
  • The Riddle by Alison Croggon
  • The Skystone by Jack Whyte
  • City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare
  • The City by David Moody
  • The Return Man by V. M. Zito

Actually, the first one, The Path of the Fallen is not a Christmas present so much as a pleasant Christmas Eve surprise from the author who sent me his book to review.  Dan O’Brien’s book will be a workout for my wrists because it is 600 pages and is a surprisingly heavy book.

Aside from City of Fallen Angels, all of the books I received are ones I’ve never read.  Yesterday I finished The Return Man (expect a review soon!) and last night, or early in the morning depending on how you count I finished The City by David Moody.  I want to finish some of the books I received last time and the time before that (and the time before the time before that) before I start on any other new ones, which means I’ll be reading and reviewing popular fiction like Game of Thrones and 1984.

So, my fellow book lovers, what did you get for Christmas?

My New Year’s Resolutions

Obviously the world hasn’t ended yet today, so I think I’m pretty safe in declaring my intentions for the new year.  I only achieved one of my goals last year, so I think putting  my goals out into the public may pressure me into actually doing them.  What are my goals this year?

1.  Get back into writing.

Writing was essentially my life, my entire reason for living a few years ago.  But then a personal crisis came around and not only did I get out of practice, I lost the will to write fiction.  I think I’m fully recovered from the crisis in question so I want to ease back into writing.  That also means I’ll have to clear some of my schedule, but it isn’t likely to impact how much I post here on The Mad Reviewer.

2.  Stop procrastinating when it comes to reading the books of authors who contact me.

I am a horrible procrastinator, which is why I thought my ‘In Progress’ page would motivate me to read the books of writers who contact me in a timely manner.  This has obviously not been the case, mainly because I am a terrible procrastinator when it comes to anything that can be perceived as work.  And to make things even more confusing, when I actually get started on many books it isn’t work, it’s enjoyable!  Yet I still procrastinate.  But no more!  It’s about time I stuck to my commitments.

3.  Have more patience with people.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have much patience when it comes to other people.  I’ll also be the first to admit that many people don’t notice this about me because I conceal it fairly well.  “Kill ’em with kindness” applies to people I don’t like and who don’t like me.  However, this policy tends to have the unintended side effect of building up stress and frustration, which also isn’t healthy.  That’s why, when I am feeling frustrated or stressed out, I am going to take a nice, deep breath and calm down.  Not everyone catches on quickly and you’re not always right.

Well, these are my resolutions.  What are yours?

What would you like to see in the new year?

2013 is almost upon us, which is a really scary thought.  In the new year I’m going to be doing an ‘origins’ post on my blog’s one year anniversary (January 13), but I really have no new ideas for the new year.  That’s where you guys come in.  You’re the ones that keep me blogging, so what would you like to see different?  Just take a few seconds of your time to click on your choice in the poll and maybe leave a comment explaining your choice.  After all, there’s always room for improvement and you’re the ones that keep The Mad Reviewer going.

My Favourite Books of 2012

Yes, 2012 is nearly over, which means it’s time to round up my favourite books for the year.  I could have called this the best books of 2012, but that would be unfair because what I like is not necessarily what other people like.  Therefore, I will be counting down my favourite books, completely ignoring reading level.  A good book is a good book in my eyes, whether it was written for tweens, teenagers or adults.  However, for convenience I will be classifying them by genre.  So what were my favourite books this year?  Read on!

The Song of Troy by Colleen McCulloughHistorical Fiction: The Song of Troy by Colleen McCullough.

I’ve read a lot of historical fiction this year, but The Song of Troy was my absolute favourite.  It had all the grandeur of the original myth, but the characters were brought to life in a way I had never seen before.  They had realistic motivations and we got to see the points of view of pretty much all of the main players, which was a real treat.  There was no magic, no gods, only a plausible historical scenario in Colleen McCullough’s masterpiece, which makes it even more impressive.  I can’t praise it enough.
