The Best and Worst of July 2015

Well, July hasn’t been the most consistent month for me posting-wise but it has been quite busy.  August will be a little more consistent for me as things wind down but then at the end of the month posting may be a little more spotty again because I’m moving off to the city.  It’s exciting and not a little terrifying but I think it’s going to be an overall plus.

Stats-wise July was of course quite bad but I expected that because of how inconsistent my posting was.  I had a total of 3,727 views with 2,472 of those being unique views.  That’s one of my lowest months in the past year but it was to be expected.  August will be much better, particularly with schools starting throughout North America and more teachers and students start searching for resources.

So what were the most popular posts this month?

  1. Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal
  2. How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour
  3. The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome
  4. Guest Post: #WeNeedDiverseRomance…Now
  5. The Day an Author Suggested I Kill Myself

The first three were predictable and #5 suggests that my author post made its way around Facebook again, as it periodically does.  Other bloggers seem to discover it and share it even years later to warn others so I can definitely say that publishing it was a good idea.  No other bloggers (or editors!) should endure the abuse that total arse dishes out at the slightest drop of the hat.  What I’m really happy about, however, is how well Madhuri Blaylock’s post about diversity in the romance genre did.  She put a lot of effort into it and I was so happy to host it and promote her upcoming romance novel.  She’s absolutely right: romance and fiction in general needs a lot more diversity, particularly when it comes to mainstream novels that the big 3 publishers put out.

Okay, then what were the least popular posts this month?

  1. My Interview with Janeal Falor
  2. Electrify Me by Bibi Rizer
  3. Blood Oath by Felicity Pulman
  4. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
  5. The White Queen by Philippa Gregory

Again, none of these are particularly surprising.  They’re either older books or books that aren’t exactly the most popular books ever.  It’s too bad in the case of most of them but as always no one article stays on the worst list from month to month.  My interview with Janeal Falor was disappointing to see in the bottom 5 but again it’s not a big deal as the worst 5 always rotate.

So folks, that was my July.  August is off to a rough start, I know, but things are going to get better.

The Best and Worst of March 2015

I don’t know about you guys, but March just flew by for me.  We’ve been having beautiful weather here in general although we’re currently experiencing a bit of a snowstorm.  But then it’s supposed to be nice again by the end of next week, so I can’t really complain.  Things are generally going well for me and I’m super excited about Game of Thrones Season 5 premiering next Sunday (because I totally haven’t mentioned that before).

Stats-wise March was okay.  I received a total of 5,708 views with 3,549 of those being unique views.  That’s up from 5,169 views in February so things are looking up.  I expect as soon as Game of Thrones begins to get more hits than usual because of my SEO-heavy article (completely by accident, I assure you).  And here in April I’m hoping to do another Game of Thrones article as well as another Forgotten Figures article.  It’s been quite a while since I’ve done articles on either topic but I feel I’m ready to sink my teeth into both fantasy and history once more.

So what were some of the best articles this month?

1.  Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal

2.  How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour

3.  The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome

4.  The Mad Reviewer is Open to Review Requests (Temporarily)

5.  Why no Writer Wants to Tackle Chronic Pain

I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!  I can’t believe that the Game of Thrones article was once again #1.  But in all seriousness, I’m really not all that surprised with the top 5 articles this month.  I’m getting lots of links from class wiki pages on my Hunger Games article and my speed reading article has always been popular because it’s something a lot of people aspire to.  Maybe next month a new article will actually appear in the top 5.

What were the worst posts this month?

1.  The Return of the Weird Search Terms

2.  Discussion: Blogging Pet Peeves

3.  Sins of the Lost by Linda Poitevin

4.  The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

5.  Crashed by Robin Wasserman

Meh.  Once again there are no real surprises here.  My reviews of Crashed and The Historian have appeared on the 5 worst list before and I’m sure they’ll appear on here again eventually.  They’re just not all that popular in terms of search engine traffic.  Which is fine because they’re definitely balanced out by the insane amount of search engine traffic I’m still getting on my usual top 3 posts.  As I’ve said before, they’re all pretty good books.  They’re just not that popular.

Well, that pretty much sums up my March.  How was yours?  Which articles of yours get the most search engine traffic?

The Best and Worst of January 2015

Well, January was a pretty good month for me in terms of posting.  I posted every day except Friday and I didn’t post that day because I was pretty sick.  So far, so good.  Hopefully in February I can honestly say that I posted every single day in keeping with my new year’s resolution.  And while blogging was pretty good for me, my personal life wasn’t too bad aside from the aforementioned sickness.  I’m fine now, however, and am looking forward to both The Walking Dead and John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight returning next Sunday.

In January I received 6,644 views in total with 3964 of those being unique views.  I noticed that my comments were way down for most of the month but that’s probably because I didn’t post anything too terribly interesting/controversial other than some Saturday discussion posts.  I’m not going to lose any sleep over it and I’m just happy that January did so much better than December and that I’m back on a regular posting schedule.

So what were the best posts this month?

1.  Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal

2.  How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour

3.  The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome

4.  Best Seller by Martha Reynolds

5.  The Mad Reviewer Reading and Reviewing Challenge 2015 Sign Up

Once again, there are no real surprises here.  All of the top four have been in the top five for at least the last three months and my reading challenge sign up is always popular.  I just have to get around to updating the official list since more people joined!  It’s not as many people as last year but I think those people that did join this time around are more serious contestants.  I can’t wait to see how everyone does with their goals!

So what were the worst posts this month?

1.  Forgotten Figures: Zenobia

2.  The Best and Worst of November 2013

3.  Goddess Born by Kari Edgren

4.  Sondok: Princess of the Moon and Stars by Sheri Holman

5.  Wake by Amanda Hocking

Um, ouch?  My Forgotten Figures article on Zenobia seems to be truly forgotten by pretty much the whole internet since it only had one view in the entire month.  I spent two hours writing it and far more time researching it so yeah, that’s one of the most disappointing ‘worsts’ in quite a number of months.  The others aren’t that surprising as they’re not the most popular books or they’re quite dated but I was sad to see Goddess Born by Kari Edgren on there since that is an amazingly underrated novel.  But, like Zenobia, my beloved main character Selah was forgotten.

Well, that was how my January went.  How was yours?

“Yes I Can Do” and Other Weird Search Terms

Hooray, it’s time for another weird search term round-up!  I don’t have any really freaky ones this time around, but some of them are just way out there:

yes i can do

dj mainwolf

mad track chellenge

justice road

not every important lesson in life can be learned from books

cleopatra was a sociopath

game of thrones hot girls

game of throne characters nude and dressed

sightless skew

And, the crowning glory:

astrophysicists who are familiar with asteroids who have died

I don’t recall ever talking about astrophysicists or really much about asteroids, let alone about dead astrophysicists who studied asteroids.  That search term was almost as puzzling as ‘sightless skew’, which I have no clue about.  The weirdest one by far was “yes i can do”.  Why would you search that phrase?  And, more importantly, why did it land that person on my blog?  Ah, the great mysteries of life.

So what do you guys think of these search terms?  Can you explain some of the weirder ones?  And have you personally received any weird search terms lately?

The Best and Worst of April 2014

Remember how, back in my January installment of this series I said it would be along time before I broke my monthly views record of 8,228?  I broke that record last month in March and then I thought to myself, “Well there’s no way I’m going to break the record again so soon.”  Enter April 2014, my best month ever.  In April I broke both my daily stats record and my monthly views record.  The previous daily record was 861, the new record is 918 views on April 6.  My previous monthly record was 8,941 views and my new record is 11,905 views. I was also able to welcome 54 new followers to my blog for a total of 842 followers.  Now that is a good month to make up for the stress and general awfulness of my personal life right now.

Now without further ado let’s look at my top 5 articles:

1.  Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal

2.  The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome

3.  How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour

4.  The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

5.  How Not to Criticize a Book Reviewer

Thanks to Game of Thrones Season 4 premiering on television my statistics on my Game of Thrones article, which have always been high, skyrocketed.  Just to give you an idea of how crazy it was I have to say that of the 11,905 views I received this month, 6,895 of them were on my rebuttal article alone (that’s 58%!).  The second best article by comparison only received 343 views.  That’s insane.

So which articles were the worst this month?

1.  City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

2.  The Goddess Test by Aimée Carter

3.  The Mad Reviewer’s 2013 Holiday Book Buying Guide (Part Two)

4.  Writing the Popular Novel by Loren D. Estleman

5.  The Oracle of Delphi Blog Tour Kick-Off and Giveaway

Meh.  I think it’s pretty obvious why all of these are in the bottom 5 list this month.  They’re either really old posts or posts that just aren’t relevant anymore because of things like blog tours ending and Christmas being 8 months away.  As usual, my 5 worst list doesn’t bother me in the least because I know it’ll be different next month.

Well folks, that was pretty much my April: pretty bad in real life, awesome in the blogosphere.  How was your April?  When do you experience spikes in blogging traffic?
