The Best and Worst of April 2015
Um, where did April go? I feel like it went by in a blur. One day I was doing the March financial statements at work and after what felt like one week later I started doing the April financial statements today. So really I can’t say how my April went other than fast. I was glad Game of Thrones started up again and that the weather has been really nice here in my corner of Saskatchewan. My formal dress that I ordered came in the other day and only needs some tiny adjustments to fit perfectly. Things are really looking up for May.
Stats-wise April was not bad. I received 5,242 views in total, which is down from March by about 600 but I’m not too worried. My unique views were pretty decent with 3,550 in total in April. That’s a lot less than I received last April when my Game of Thrones rebuttal article really took off with the premiere of season 4. I really can’t complain. I’m just happy that my daily views are consistent and that Game of Thrones is back.
So what were my best articles this month?
1. Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal
2. How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour
3. The Day an Author Suggested I Kill Myself
4. The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome
5. The Game of Thrones Rape Problem
There aren’t really any new ones here except for #5. What’s more interesting to me is that in regards to #3, Bruce Willis was shoved back into the spotlight when he launched yet another highly sexist and swear-heavy attack on an editor who dared to edit. She posted it on Twitter and although I won’t link to it, it was pretty shocking and disgusting. Well, not for this guy, who has previously launched anti-Semitic attacks against some editors, but shocking to polite society.
So what were my worst posts this month?
1. The Best and Worst of March 2015
2. The Mad Reviewer’s First Giveaway
3. My Interview with John Heldt (2)
4. Writers: Beware the False Editor
5. Spoils of Olympus: By the Sword by Christian Kachel
At least this month every single ‘worst’ post on the list is new. Some of them, like #1 and #2 are completely dated by now while others are books that are not very popular, authors that are not exactly bestsellers and articles on topics that are quite common like bad editors. I’m not disappointed by any of these on the list because I know that as usual there will be different ones next month.
So how was your April? Did it go by as quickly as mine?
The Best and Worst of March 2015
I don’t know about you guys, but March just flew by for me. We’ve been having beautiful weather here in general although we’re currently experiencing a bit of a snowstorm. But then it’s supposed to be nice again by the end of next week, so I can’t really complain. Things are generally going well for me and I’m super excited about Game of Thrones Season 5 premiering next Sunday (because I totally haven’t mentioned that before).
Stats-wise March was okay. I received a total of 5,708 views with 3,549 of those being unique views. That’s up from 5,169 views in February so things are looking up. I expect as soon as Game of Thrones begins to get more hits than usual because of my SEO-heavy article (completely by accident, I assure you). And here in April I’m hoping to do another Game of Thrones article as well as another Forgotten Figures article. It’s been quite a while since I’ve done articles on either topic but I feel I’m ready to sink my teeth into both fantasy and history once more.
So what were some of the best articles this month?
1. Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal
2. How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour
3. The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome
4. The Mad Reviewer is Open to Review Requests (Temporarily)
5. Why no Writer Wants to Tackle Chronic Pain
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you! I can’t believe that the Game of Thrones article was once again #1. But in all seriousness, I’m really not all that surprised with the top 5 articles this month. I’m getting lots of links from class wiki pages on my Hunger Games article and my speed reading article has always been popular because it’s something a lot of people aspire to. Maybe next month a new article will actually appear in the top 5.
What were the worst posts this month?
1. The Return of the Weird Search Terms
2. Discussion: Blogging Pet Peeves
3. Sins of the Lost by Linda Poitevin
4. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Meh. Once again there are no real surprises here. My reviews of Crashed and The Historian have appeared on the 5 worst list before and I’m sure they’ll appear on here again eventually. They’re just not all that popular in terms of search engine traffic. Which is fine because they’re definitely balanced out by the insane amount of search engine traffic I’m still getting on my usual top 3 posts. As I’ve said before, they’re all pretty good books. They’re just not that popular.
Well, that pretty much sums up my March. How was yours? Which articles of yours get the most search engine traffic?
The Best and Worst of January 2015
Well, January was a pretty good month for me in terms of posting. I posted every day except Friday and I didn’t post that day because I was pretty sick. So far, so good. Hopefully in February I can honestly say that I posted every single day in keeping with my new year’s resolution. And while blogging was pretty good for me, my personal life wasn’t too bad aside from the aforementioned sickness. I’m fine now, however, and am looking forward to both The Walking Dead and John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight returning next Sunday.
In January I received 6,644 views in total with 3964 of those being unique views. I noticed that my comments were way down for most of the month but that’s probably because I didn’t post anything too terribly interesting/controversial other than some Saturday discussion posts. I’m not going to lose any sleep over it and I’m just happy that January did so much better than December and that I’m back on a regular posting schedule.
So what were the best posts this month?
1. Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal
2. How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour
3. The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome
4. Best Seller by Martha Reynolds
5. The Mad Reviewer Reading and Reviewing Challenge 2015 Sign Up
Once again, there are no real surprises here. All of the top four have been in the top five for at least the last three months and my reading challenge sign up is always popular. I just have to get around to updating the official list since more people joined! It’s not as many people as last year but I think those people that did join this time around are more serious contestants. I can’t wait to see how everyone does with their goals!
So what were the worst posts this month?
2. The Best and Worst of November 2013
3. Goddess Born by Kari Edgren
4. Sondok: Princess of the Moon and Stars by Sheri Holman
Um, ouch? My Forgotten Figures article on Zenobia seems to be truly forgotten by pretty much the whole internet since it only had one view in the entire month. I spent two hours writing it and far more time researching it so yeah, that’s one of the most disappointing ‘worsts’ in quite a number of months. The others aren’t that surprising as they’re not the most popular books or they’re quite dated but I was sad to see Goddess Born by Kari Edgren on there since that is an amazingly underrated novel. But, like Zenobia, my beloved main character Selah was forgotten.
Well, that was how my January went. How was yours?
The Best and Worst of August 2014
This month was very bad posting-wise but now that the summer rush is done at work I think you guys can reasonably expect me to go back to my regular routine of daily posts. I just need to get back in the hang of things, starting today. As a consequence of my irregular posting, my stats were significantly lower than they were in July. I only received 5,308 views as opposed to 6,344 but I expect things to go back to normal this fall as everyone falls back into their routines (myself included).
Here are the top posts this August:
1. Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal
2. How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour
3. The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome
4. Discussion: Your School Reading Experiences
5. The Mad Reviewer 1,000 Follower Giveaway
None of these are all that surprising, really. They’re either previously popular posts that have maintained their popularity for months (or sometimes years!) or they’re posts that naturally would attract a lot of attention like reading in school or $50 giveaways. I’m definitely expecting my Hunger Games article to rise in popularity as kids start to do novel studies on the book this fall but I’m still predicting that Game of Thrones will reign supreme.
So what were my worst posts this month?
2. Living with Your Body and Other Things You Hate by Emily Sandoz and Troy DuFrene
4. The Fires of Merlin by T. A. Barron
5. The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer
As usual, my reaction to the worst list is ‘meh’ at best. None of these have featured before and they’re either outdated posts like the first one or books that aren’t necessarily bestsellers at this point in time. There will be a new line up of ‘worst’ posts next month so I’m not going to lose sleep over any of these particular ones appearing here.
So how was your August? Did anyone go anywhere interesting on holidays?
The Best and Worst of July 2014
Yep, this is another Best and Worst of… installment that’s a little late but it’s better late than never. Especially considering all of the tech problems I’ve had recently (and am still having). My keyboard recently died on my desktop so now I have to use a laptop that is way too small for my long fingers. Oh well, things could be worse.
Sadly on the statistics front, July just couldn’t compete with the previous four record-breaking months. Now that Game of Thrones is done for another several months and school is out (so I don’t get hits on my Hunger Games articles as much) I expected my views to go down and I wasn’t surprised when I only received 6,344 page views with 4,568 unique views. Still, that’s much better than last July, which clocked in at 3,958 total page views. My site is continuing to grow in popularity so I can hardly complain about how tough I have it.
Well, what were the best articles this month?
1. Why Girls Hate Game of Thrones—A Rebuttal
2. How to Read 100 Pages in an Hour
3. The Hunger Games and Ancient Rome
4. Discussion: Who are Book Reviews For?
5. Discussion: Your School Reading Experiences
As with the previous four months, my Game of Thrones article gave me over half of the views I received and the other articles preceding it were far behind by comparison (3000+ hits compared to 100). My discussions did better than they usually do, mainly because I haven’t really posted discussions for a while since my tech problems started. Speaking of which, I still have to reply to all of those awesome comments!
So what were the worst articles in July?
1. The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady by Gerald Morris
2. Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
4. The Fire Within by Chris d’Lacey
5. The Secret War by Matt Myklusch
All of these are reviews this month, which is unusual, but at the same time it’s not all that concerning. They’re all books that have been out for a while so of course they’re not going to get the same amount of hits as newer books that are being talked about all over the internet. I don’t see any repeat offenders so I usually don’t get too worried about which reviews appear on the worst list.
Well, that’s how my July went: lower stats and tons of tech problems but still not too bad. Work is busy, which is good, but at the same time I look back on the slow days of winter with longing because while I’m ringing up customers constantly I’m not getting any cleaning or estimating done. Still, I can’t complain. How was your July?
